How is the Traditionnelle different from the Patrimony?
Same house, different eras. The Patrimony is a round, minimalist 1950s design with a domed dial and no bezel to speak of. The Traditionnelle takes its cues from 18th century Geneva watchmaking: stepped case, fluted caseback, dauphine hands, and a railroad minute track. If the Patrimony is understated, the Traditionnelle is classical.
What movement is in the Traditionnelle 87172?
Calibre 2455, Vacheron's in-house automatic with a 40-hour reserve and a date at 3 o'clock. It carries the Hallmark of Geneva and is finished to the same standard as the manual calibres, with a 22k gold rotor visible through the sapphire caseback.
Is 38mm too small for a men's watch today?
No, and on a dress watch it's the right size. The Traditionnelle's stepped case and thin bezel give it more presence than the number suggests, and 38mm sits correctly under a shirt cuff, which a 41mm dress watch doesn't. Works on wrists from 6.5 to 7.5 inches.
